Description
Grant at the capture of the City of Mexico, commanding soldiers in the cupola of a church.
"While the troops were advancing on the City of Mexico, they were much annoyed by the fire of the enemy, from the tops of their flat-roofed houses. Lieutenant Ulysses S. Grant, with a few men, hoisted a battery of Mountain Howitzers to the cupola of the Church of San Fernando and opened an enfilading fire on the housetops" (excerpt from artists correspondence).
