Description
The first powered, controlled, sustained flight. Orville Wright at the controls of the machine, lying prone on the lower wing with hips in the cradle which operated the wing-warping mechanism. Wilbur Wright running alongside to balance the machine, has just released his hold on the forward upright of the right wing. The starting rail, the wing-rest, a coil box, and other items needed for flight preparation are visible behind the machine. (Orville Wright preset the camera and had John T. Daniels squeeze the rubber bulb, tripping the shutter.). From an original 1903 photo.

I would like to thank the buyer of this Wright Brothers print, as well. Your generous appreciation certainly brightens the holiday season. All of the participants at the scene of this photo were likely involved in the technical achievement. But I like to think that this image captured the point in time that Orville, Wilbur and the spectators transcended the moment and grasped the implications of what the Wright Brothers had just started with this first powered flight. Hope you enjoy it more and more as the years pass. Cheers
