A powder monkey, standing by a gun on the USS New Hampshire. Crew members that carried bags of gunpowder, these boys were short and fast. The image was taken while sailing off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina. Original 1864 photo (right half of a stereograph) from the Federal Navy, during Civil War seaborne expeditions against the Atlantic Coast of the Confederate rebels.
