Description
Design for the 'Minerva' mosaic installed in 1897 in the Library of Congress (Thomas Jefferson Building), Washington DC. Minerva (Roman goddess of wisdom, the arts, trade and defense) wears a full length classic cloak with the shining sun high in the sky behind her and an owl nearby. She holds a staff while reading an unfurled scroll. A shield and helmet rest on the ground at her feet. All is framed by an arched floral border. From an original 19th century (1896) black chalk, pastel and gilt drawing by Elihu Vedder. All Rights Reserved © 2013 padre art
