Description
A photographer captures the take off of Wilbur Wright for the first airplane flight in New York City. He flew from Governors Island to nearby Bedloe’s Island (now known as Liberty Island), circled the Statue of Liberty and landed back at Governors Island five minutes later. If you look closely you can see the canoe fastened to the undercarriage as a floatation device for the plane, Wilbur had a life preserver for himself. From an original 1909 photo by Bain News Agency.
