Description
This is the left-side image of a triptych showing the sculptor Hidari Jingoro, who is famous for his deity carvings which adorn shrines and temples throughout Japan. After his right hand was injured he learned to sculpt with his left. He then added the title Hidari (which means, left) to his name. There is also a story told of his carving such a life-like sculpture of an exceptionally beautiful women that later it began to move and breath (as in Pygmalion). From an original 19th century (1847) woodcut, Meiyo Migi ni Tekinashi Hidarijingoro (Famous people: The Incomparable Hidari Jingoro), by Utagawa Kuniyoshi. All Rights Reserved © 2012 padre art
