Description
The USS Frigate Missouri completed the first trans-Atlantic voyage of a U.S. steam powered ship at Gibralter, on Aug. 26th, 1843. The very next day an accident caused an explosion which destroyed the ship. A sketch made on the spot by Lieut. G.P. Mands shows the crew of H.M.S. Malabar in the foreground watch as the USS Missouri explodes and burns in the distance. This image was turned into a drawing by E. Duncan with the lithograph created by T.G. Dutton. From an original 19th century (1843) chromolithograph by E. Duncan. All Rights Reserved © 2013 padre art
