Description
Edge of the burned district, corner of Franklin and Sacramento Streets, San Francisco, California, 1906. The man with the vintage camera, on the right, was one of the many photographers documenting the disaster. They were on the spot and preserving images for us even while the remains of the city still smoldered. This damage was likely done by artillery fire the Army used to create the fire brakes that eventually saved what remained of the city from going up in flames.
